Write Erase - Remove VLANS

Another common question I see from people setting up a Cisco lab for their CCNA is...

"I did a write erase on the switch but the old vlans are still there. What gives?"

Well, doing a write erase will remove delete your startup config but it doesn't touch the vlan database.

If you would like to remove all traces of previous vlans as well as startup configurations do the following.

Rack1SW4#del vlan.dat
Delete filename [vlan.dat]?
Delete flash:vlan.dat? [confirm]
Rack1SW4#write erase

Make sure you answer no if prompted to save your config.

This works on Cisco 2900's, 3550's and 3560's and possibly others but I haven't tested them.

Cisco Lab Console Port Config

I have gotten a few emails about what console port configuration I use in my lab. These questions were from people studying for the CCNA and I thought it might be helpful information for a post.

The below config prevents the console port from timing out. It also stops those annoying "*Oct 8 08:54:27.180: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by console" messages when configuring a device.

R1>enable
R1#config t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
R1(config)#line con 0
R1(config-line)#no exec-timeout
R1(config-line)#logging synchronous
R1(config-line)#exit
R1(config)#exit
R1#

*Note "exec-timeout 0 0" is the same as "no exec-timeout"

Well, here is how you fix it.

Router#config terminal

Router(config)#no service config

Router(config)#exit

Router#copy running-config startup-config

And you are done! You will not see that error again!

I have used regular expressions for years when configuring Cisco routers. However, the bulk of my use of them has been when configuring BGP. However now that I am using them for dial-peers in our Cisco routers used for our VOIP system, I have decided that I need to commit this information to memory. Up until now every time I write an regular expression I have to refer to the documentation.

Firefox Add-on - Ad Blocker

I have been using the Ad Blocker add-on for Firefox for a few days now and I must say it is one of the more useful ones I use. It allows you to subscribe to a list of sites to be filtered. You can customize that list as you see fit. However, my favorite feature of this add-on is the ability to simply right-click on an "image ad" and block it. This is really handy for me since most of the sites that host their own ads that aren't listed in the filter list provided with the add-on.

ASA license upgrade!!!

Do you need to upgrade your ASA's license? Well here is how you do it!!

To upgrade the current license of your Cisco ASA, you need to order a new license key from Cisco or your local Cisco Partner. You will then receive your PAK (Product Authorization Key) number from Cisco. Then you will need to enter your PAK and the serial number of your ASA at www.cisco.com/go/license. Keep in mind that if you have two ASAs that you need to do each ASA separately. After that you will receive a new license key in your email after a couple of hours.

To apply this new license key in your security appliance, configure the following:

ASA5500(config)# activation-key (insert key)
ASA5500(config)#exit
ASA5500#write mem
ASA5500#reload

Update – School and CCNP/CCIE

I have paid my tuition and purchased books for the fall semester. I am going to be taking an accounting class, a math class and an economics class. I am looking forward to getting started. I have also decided to renew my CCNP and that the same time continue my study for the CCIE Routing and Switching. I have already renewed my CCNA. I had let both my CCNP and CCNA expire by mistake. I took and passed the CCIE RS written exam a month too late for it to renew my other certifications. However, it should be fun to study for and take the new tests. I am going to focus on the below topics first.

1. Frame-Relay
2. BGP
3. OSPF
4. EIGRP
5. IS-IS
6. Multicasting
7. IPv6
8. IOS Features

These should take me through the BSCI exam and go a long way toward CCIE preparation. I have purchased the new CCNP books and I also have purchased Internetwork Expert’s End-to-End CCIE program for the Routing and Switching Exam.

Well, I have had a bad sore throat have been very very tired for about three weeks. The doctor thought I may have to have my tonsils out. However, they gave me some antibiotics before they took that drastic measure. I am happy to report that as of Friday I am feeling much better. I have stayed home all weekend and I am feeling well rested.

I find this is nearly impossible for me to read one book at a time. I have to have several started and jump between them. Otherwise I loose interest and never finish them. I wonder is that is a common problem? I guess it might be my ADD showing.

Summer Semester is Underway

I am taking nine credit hours over the summer while working full time. One of my classes is online and I think I may have to drop it and take it in the fall. It isn't too much work I just think I may need the in class time to keep my 4.0. My math class is going well 100% on all quizzes and homework so far.

I still have my eye on renewing my CCNP, taking the Microsoft Server 2008 exams and renewing my quest for the CCIE Routing and Switching. However, for now I am focusing my energy on projects at work and completing my degree.

I am going to be taking more programming/computer science classes for the next few semesters. I will be focusing on C++ and Java. I am very interested in http://www.topcoder.com. I don't think I would every win anything but it looks very fun.

I went to see the new Hulk movie with Casey and I thought it was great!!

I purchased Big Brain Academy for the Wii. I really like it so far!

Well back to Visual Basic Homework.

The Spring Semester is Finally Over!!!

I am so glad this semester is over. I am even happier that I was able to maintain my 4.0 GPA. I am taking another math class this summer. I am also taking a class is Visual Basic.

In other news I am trying to keep up on my Cisco Systems certifications. I am thinking about renewing my CCNP. I also need to get the new Microsoft Server 2008 certs one of these days.

I am closing on another rental property in two weeks. I hope to get it rented ASAP.

Ever since I began working on redesigning my employer’s disaster recovery plan I have noticed that I have been going though my antacid much faster. I am enjoying the work and getting things done but it certainly isn't easy.

Honda FCX Clarity

As many of you know my wife and I purchased new 2007 Honda's this year. I got a Civic and she got a Fit. I normally keep cars 6 to 7 years. At that point I am really hoping cars like the Honda FCX Clarity are more widespread. For those of you who don't know the FCX is a hydrogen fuel cell car that is powered completely by hydrogen and emits only water vapor as exhaust.
